Designer perfumes and designer fragrances are fragrance oils and aromas blended in such a unique way as creates a unique aromatic spell around them catching hold of your olfactory senses in a compulsive, hypnotic way.

The origin of the word perfume lies in the Latin "per fumum", meaning through smoke. Mesopotamians and Egyptians were the first in the world to experiment with smells and come out with products that took the rest of the world by the romance of their mood-changing effects.

Tapputi, a Mesopotamian, is credited with making the first perfume of the world although some recent archaeological excavations have come up with an even older evidence of them being produced in Pyrgos, Cyprus as long back as 4,000 years from now.

The art of perfumery entered Europe as late as 14th century BC. First of all it took its roots in Hungary. From there it spilled to Italy during the Renaissance period. Later France took over the lead, which it still maintains as on date.

Perfume oils, fragrance oils or aromas - whatever you call them - are diluted in a mixture of ethanol and water. The intensity and the longevity of the scent depend on their concentration in their base.

Mostly perfumes are classified based on their sources, like single floral, floral bouquet, ambery, woody, leather, chypre (Cyprus), and fougère (fern).

The plant sources use their barks, flowers, blossoms, fruits, leaves, twigs, resins, roots, rhizomes, bulbs, seeds and woods.

The animal sources use ambergris, castoreum, civet, honeycomb and musk.

There are other natural sources that use lichens and seaweed for the purpose, whereas the synthetic sources use synthetic chemicals for the same.

The processes of their extraction and their blended composition from these sources are as varied as their brands are, starting from maceration or solvent extraction, to distillation, to expression, to enfleurage to name a few along with many others to blend the extractions.
